| Application Description | This is the most important system for our customers as it is the the interface they use to book their tickets and hotels. |
| Reasons of the Choice | This system could be seen like the "image" of our company and we try to make it simple and easy to use so that it takes just a few clicks to find a flight and book. Therefore we in-sourced it to keep the know-how in the company in order to achieve competitive advantage. It also supports our core processes and contacts with customers and we want to keep the control over the whole application. |
| Benefits of the Approach | We managed to develop a different system than our competitors and by providing additional functionality our customers like to come back and use the simple interface which keeps its core design even when the background changes. |
| Problems Encountered | We had to solve several problem arising with the in-house development: we had to deal with mapping the new system to our older (legacy) plane capacity planning systems and creating an integrated and cooperative interface. We had to migrate the old system to new hardware to be able to run the whole system of booking in the real time as the new system was very capacity demanding. |
| Application Description | Using RFID technology and the Cargo Tracking System we are able to watch and track packages and other cargo objects on their way to the destination. We have also developed an online interface for our customers. |
| Reasons of the Choice | There was no such system already existing on the market and therefore no best practices could be expected from outsourcing the system. We also had to establish the whole process and as it is one of the key areas of our business and we didn't want the know-how leaving our company. |
| Benefits of the Approach | The system is tailored to our needs and requirements and also very tightly aligned with the business process it supports. |
| Problems Encountered | We had to establish the whole process of cargo tracking which took time and resources and is still not optimized. We also had to learn new technology - RFID - to read the bar codes at control points. |
| Application Description | Web based application supporting our training services. |
| Reasons of the Choice | This was developed on the continous request from the training department. This is a simple application and despite the trainers not being IT specialist they are able to develop the environment easily using advanced IDE. Moreover, the trainers are the most engaged users and developing such application made it easier for them to use it. |
| Benefits of the Approach | It increased the use of e-learning modules and also encouraged further development of study material as the trainers felt strong sense of ownership and enjoyed working with their own "fruits". |
| Problems Encountered | Problems started to appear when the trainee number crossed a certain level and the application started to crash because of the amount of users trying to access it. The problem was reported and fixed in cooperation with IT department. |
| Application Description | This system is used by our system operators to navigate planes to runway and to control the traffic at the airport. |
| Reasons of the Choice | This is a very critical system and a little failure could cost lives. Hence we decided to outsource it to a well-established company with a long tradition in plane navigation systems which could use trained resources and verified practices to provide us with a reliable system we would not be able to develop on our own. |
| Benefits of the Approach | Best practices in the field and also full responsibility for any failure of the system functionality. A thorough contract also guarantees immediate support and help in case of any problems. |
| Problems Encountered | We had problems with customization and localization as we required Czech version of the system and also Prague airport is built in a specific way requiring additional rules to the system. That resulted in increased costs. |
| Application Description | This system help us see the customer in the center of our activities which should therefore aim to serve and satisfy the customer. We use it to concentrate all the knowledge and information of our customers to be able to access them from a single point of information view. |
| Reasons of the Choice | This is a large system with relatively common functionality. In addition, there's a large user base and a certain level of accessibility and processing need to be aasured as well as integration with other systems. We also needed it fast to be able to be competitive as all our major competitors had already obtained it. |
| Benefits of the Approach | We could have the system in very short time without the need to allocate or obtain extra resources to develop it. We could remain focused on core business activities while the system was developed and implemented. In addition, the scope of the project didn't threaten our performance as the amount of inner sources required was relatively small (in comparison to doing it ourselves). |
| Problems Encountered | As we needed it really fast delivered and customized the cost were excessively high. |
| Application Description | This application module covers payroll counting. It is not a newly developed system but more like rework as a result of revolution in the Czech Labour law. |
| Reasons of the Choice | We bough already developed HR system from a reputable company and had it customized to our parameters. This is a standard application with common functionality and there was no reason for us to develop it on our own. |
| Benefits of the Approach | We benefit from the best practices used to develop this system and also from costs which were lower than we would have to incur by in-/self-sourcing. |
| Problems Encountered | There were problems with the contract with the supplier of the module: we couldn't agree on whether the rework resulting from law changes are a part of already-paid-for maintenance or not. |
