There are 264 known species of monkey. Monkeys range in size from 5-6 in long and 4-5 oz in weight, to almost 3.3 ft long and weighing 77 lb. Apes are commonly mistaken for monkeys, though technically they are not monkeys.
Monkeys have been around in forms similar to modern primates for hundred of thousands of years (more depending on who you ask) and humans have evolved from them. For this reason we should apreciate monkeys for what they really are: amazing creatures! This site is dedicated to them and we hope that it helps raise awareness of them.
Monkeys are held in high regard in some cultures and is even one of the years in the Chinese calendar. We should learn from these peoples and think more about our closest cousins.
Monkeys are always protrayed as very playful even mischievous aniamls that are great as pets. On the other hand monkeys are incredibly intelligent and are able to be trained to do very complex tasks and still show at least some understanding for what they are doing. This makes them ideal helpers for us. They are already helpers to people with disabilitys but there is much more potential for them( discussed in more detail in Possible Future Uses of Monkeys ). They could be part of the solution to many of the problems in the world today if they are allowed to their full potential.
