How is blood transfused?

Blood is transfused in three main ways

  • Plasmapheresis

  • Thrombapheresis

  • Leucopheresis

  • Plasmapheresis

The term plasmaphereis means, “ taking away plasma”. The plasma is removed and the red cells are then returned to the donor with a plasma substitute.

    Thrombapheresis

This simply means the collection of platelets. By using the process of centrifugation large quantities of platelets can be collected from single donors.

    Leucopheresis

This means removing the white blood cells or granulocytes from the blood with the return of the rest of the blood to the donor. There are 3 methods which this can be done.
  • Separartion in a blood cell processor
  • Filtration leucopheresis
  • Gravity leucopheresis
